Material gains: Why silicone fits the bill for precise dosing

They are vitally important, make therapy possible, and they have become an integral part in hospitals or home-care settings: medication and feeding pumps supply patients with essential medication and nutrition.  It is not only the right electronic and mechanical components that are crucial factors, but also the choice of materials for the pump segment. As in so many other areas of medical engineering, silicone plays a prominent role here.
What properties must a product have in order to find a lasting place in the healthcare sector? What are the specifications? It must be biocompatible, and in many cases skin- and blood-compatible as well. Compatibility with common sterilisation processes is usually a key requirement. It should be resistant to heat and cold and display excellent storage stability while maintaining a consistent pump performance. It is also important that the product works reliably and provides precise pumping over long periods of time. For the use in hospitals and in the home-care domain this means always administering the right dose, whether with drugs or in feeding applications. Obviously, no substances should be released from the processed material. So-called ‘extractables’ can have a negative impact on drug formulations.
It all adds up to quite a long list of product-specific requirements, which must in turn be met by the chosen material and its processing methods.  
Silicone – an exceptional material
Silicone is a perfect fit for the requirements of precise dosing and integrity when in contact with medications. Its physical/mechanical properties and the high degree of chemical purity in its formulation are decisive factors in this respect.
Among its mechanical properties, the exceptional resilience of silicone plays a significant role. It has a direct influence on the tubing segment’s pump performance over the entire period of use. The developer can be sure that his pump will always precisely dose and deliver the prescribed and programmed quantity of medication or nutritional solution. To ensure this functionality, the pump segments are subjected to a qualification and validation process as part of the development phase. Upon customer request, each lot or batch manufactured can also be tested during the production phase. The segments are tested for their adherence to pump performance specifications on a custom-built test stand that has the corresponding production pump built in.
To ensure that medications maintain the greatest possible purity, platinum-cured silicone is often preferred over the use of a peroxide catalyst, due to its excellent extractables profile.
Silicone injection moulding vs extrusion
The pump segments available on today’s market are manufactured in two differently manufactured ways. In terms of ‘pure’ production costs for fixed lengths, extruded tubing is generally more economical. However, customer and product requirements with respect to improved precision in delivery rates are becoming ever more demanding. Injection-moulded variants are therefore beginning to draw increased attention. The reason for this is that the diameter tolerance of tubing segments (for both inside and outside diameter) can be reduced by almost half, depending on dimensions and geometry. This fact has a direct positive influence on the dosing accuracy of individual pump segments in the range of 1%. Combined with the development of the appropriate silicone material formulation, in terms of Shore hardness and the type and degree of crosslinking, extremely high dosing accuracies can be achieved for the pump system as a whole over the course of the product lifecycle.
Silicone injection moulding provides added value
The intelligent use of silicone injection moulding technology allows for a range of features to be integrated in a single part. Previously these had to be provided by a more complex component. The advantages include:

  • · precision-shaped edges of the component--> no sharp corners
  • · material is highly particle-free
  • · very narrow tolerances --> very high dosing accuracy

  • · improved anti-counterfeiting
  • · maximum patient safety
When it comes to pump segments, the extrusion and injection moulding approaches each have their advantages and disadvantages.

Elon Musk lifts the veil on Tesla's electric truck of the future – and teases a new sports car

 
Elon Musk unveiled the new Tesla Semi on Thursday night — and surprised everybody with a working prototype of a new Roadster sports car whose purpose, he said, is to “give a hard-core smackdown to gasoline cars.”
Musk claims the car will rocket zero to 60 miles per hour in 1.9 seconds — the first production car to perform the feat in under 2 seconds, he said. Top speed is 250 mph. Price: $200,000.
“It’s just stupid,” he said excitedly, with an enthusiastic crowd of several hundred serving as cheerleaders and on-again, off-again girlfriend actress Amber Heard watching from the wings.
He said production is aimed at 2020.
He was sketchy about the new electric Tesla Semi. Eyebrows popped high when he claimed a range of 500 miles, far more than anyone anticipated. He provided no detail about the size and weight of the battery, but did assert that total operating costs would be lower than for a diesel-driven truck. Experts will be weighing in Friday on how that’s possible.
The truck is scheduled for production in 2019, Musk said.
Whether Tesla can build it in sufficient numbers, with acceptable levels of quality, at a total cost of ownership that makes sense to shipping fleet executives and other bulk buyers of heavy trucks is a different question.
Other truck makers, from International to Volvo to Nikola to Mercedes-Benz, are also developing electric trucks with self-driving capabilities. Tesla won’t have the market to itself.
Before Musk’s theatrics, reporters were led down a spotlighted outdoor corridor flanked by boxed hedges and into a large room that contained four big rigs: two Teslas, a Freightliner Cascadia, and an International. The reporters tended to call the Tesla models “impressive” in appearance.
No diesel engine under the hood means plenty of room in the cab. Getting in and out is more like climbing stairs than ascending a step ladder. A tall man can comfortably stand in the Tesla cab. The steering wheel is center mounted, with a touch screen on either side. The dashboard is stark, with few gauges, buttons, stalks, or knobs.
The Freightliner and the International cabs were low-ceilinged, crowded and, by comparison, claustrophobic. Tesla representatives said they did not know the model years, though they did not appear to be the latest and the interiors were certainly not the highest end.
Tesla is touting greater safety. “Jackknifing is prevented due to the Semi’s onboard sensors that detect instability and react with positive or negative torque to each wheel while independently actuating all brakes,” a company handout said.
“Jackknifing with this truck is gone,” Musk said. “You don’t have to worry about it.”
Musk claimed the Tesla Semi would go from zero to 60 mph in 5 seconds compared with 15 seconds for a diesel truck. He also said it would climb a 5%-grade hill at 65 mph, compared with a diesel’s 45 mph.
“Megachargers” will be available “worldwide” to recharge trucks to a 400-mile range in 30 minutes. No detail on the megachargers was provided, except that they will be solar-powered. “Your truck is running on sunlight,” he said.
Although Tesla set the car industry afire by proving there was a market for cool-looking high-performance electric cars, the company is a fast follower in electric trucks.
Surround cameras minimize blind spots, Tesla said. The trucks will be equipped with enhanced autopilot and other self-drive and safety features such as automatic emergency braking, automatic lane keeping and lane departure warning.
Practically all the world’s major truck manufacturers are developing electric-drive models, and plenty of start-ups are too — garbage trucks, school buses, delivery vans, medium-duty trucks, big rigs. Some are already deployed.
The profit margins for trucks are in the mid-teens, more than twice as much as for cars. Last year, 249,952 heavy duty trucks were sold in North America. But the heavy truck business is slow-growing overall — only about 0.6% a year, a rate that consulting firm Deloitte expects to continue until 2026.
Because electric trucks are starting from a small base of less than 1% of the total truck market, the segment’s growth rate will be faster. Still, said Antti Lindstrom of IHS Markit, electric penetration of the big-rig market “isn’t going to be very significant until after 2025 or 2030. And even then, it will be very limited compared to the total number of trucks being sold.”
Tesla “clearly sees the promise” of electric trucks, said Michelle Krebs, senior analyst at Autotrader. But the company will need to get a lot better at vehicle quality to compete for a customer base that is less forgiving than passenger-car buyers.
Tesla’s Model X SUV was recently named least reliable in its class by Consumer Reports, and the rollout of the Model 3 sedan has been delayed by production problems at the company’s Fremont auto factory and its Gigafactory battery plant in Nevada.
“The truck is a tool for making money,” Krebs said. “When a truck is out of commission, money is lost. In contrast, a Tesla car owner has other vehicles in the household fleet to drive if the vehicle isn’t operational.”
Musk has promised a long line of new vehicle possibilities, including the big rig, a pickup truck and, probably next up, the Model Y crossover. Tesla will sell about 100,000 vehicles this year, most of them the luxury Model S sedan and Model X sport utility.
That number will include a trickle of Model 3s, a less-expensive sedan. Tesla hopes to build several hundred thousand Model 3s a year, but the car is off to a slow start as Musk grapples with what he calls “production hell” at his factories.
The Tesla Semi will share some components with the Model 3, most notably its four electric motors. Not the battery pack, though. Tesla said the truck will have a different battery setup, more akin to those used in its Powerwall home and industrial storage units than to the batteries for its cars.
Michael Harley of Kelley Blue Book questions Tesla’s strategic direction in targeting long-haul trucks.
“The company has incorrectly aimed its sights,” he said. Batteries remain too heavy and expensive for long-haul routes, he said. “A more appropriate target … would be the short-haul, or so-called last-mile delivery.”
Most of the electric big rigs coming on the market will be built for short-haul routes, such as moving freight from an ocean port to a distribution center.
Platooning could change that equation. In a truck platoon, several big rigs pack up close enough together to be drawn along by the aerodynamic draft of the vehicle ahead, like cyclists lined up in a bike race. That would extend the range of the batteries in the following truck.
The distance is maintained by sensors attached to a computer. Platooning is legal in eight states including Michigan, Texas and Nevada. Limited testing is allowed in Florida and Utah. Human drivers are required in each truck.
Tesla may have one enthusiastic user locked up: Company watchers would not be surprised if Musk starts using the Tesla Semi to ship batteries 240 miles from Nevada to the Fremont assembly plant. But California law does not allow vehicle platoons.
Tesla is taking reservations for the truck, which will bring needed capital to the cash-burning company.

Lamborghini joins forces with MIT to develop concept electric supercar with self-healing carbon fiber structure

Automobili Lamborghini is collaborating with two laboratories of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) in what are the first steps of a possible future Lamborghini electric super sports car.
Lamborghini aims to further develop its leadership in the design and production of carbon fiber structures and parts, enhancing its ability to develop features and functions that take lightweight materials to the next level. To this end, the automaker is cooperating with Professor Anastasios John Hart, head of the Mechanosynthesis Group at the Department of Mechanical Engineering of MIT, will investigate new manufacturing routes for carbon fiber materials constituting the bodyshell of the Terzo Millennio, which will also act as an accumulator for energy storage and enable the complete body of the car to be used as a storage system. Hart says, “We are thrilled to combine our expertise in advanced materials and manufacturing with the vision and support of Automobili Lamborghini, and to realize new concepts that will shape the future of transportation.”
The Terzo Millennio supercar will feature a self-healing composite structure that can also store energy.
The project also aims to combine the technology to continuously monitor the whole carbon fiber structure, both visible and invisible, with the concept of “self-healing”: the target is to provide the Terzo Millennio with the ability to conduct its own health monitoring to detect cracks and damages in its substructure derived from accidents.  In this case, a self-repairing process starts via micro-channels filled with healing chemistries, reducing to zero the risks of small cracks propagating further in the carbon fiber structure. This allows further weight reduction with increased use of carbon fiber or the application of CFK to high-fatigue parts.
Stefano Domenicali, Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of Automobili Lamborghini, says: “Exactly one year ago we have signed an agreement with the MIT-Italy Program at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology which marked the start of a collaboration between two outstanding entities for the creation of a project that intends to write an important page in the future of super sports cars for the third millennium.
The second laboratory involved is the Dinca Research Lab, led by Professor Mircea Dinca, Department of Chemistry will focus on the electric powertrain. Here, Lamborghini plans to move away from conventional batteries and investigate the potential of supercapacitors to power the Terzo Millennio. Prof. Dinca says: "The new Lamborghini collaboration allows us to be ambitious and think outside the box in designing new materials that answer energy storage challenges for the demands of an electric sport vehicle. We look forward to teaming up with their engineers and work on this exciting project".

The all-screen Apple iPhone X is here, and it’s the new iPhone you’ll want



The 10th anniversary Apple iPhone is here, and it’s called the iPhone X (pronounced “iPhone Ten”). The Cupertino, California-based company made it official at an event on the Apple Campus in the Steve Jobs Theater — and in our iPhone X review, we call it “the best iPhone ever.”
Indeed, Apple CEO Tim Cook called the new iPhone X “the biggest leap forward since the original iPhone,” and it’s easy to see why. The OLED display — an iPhone first — is called the Super Retina Display and measures 5.8 inches, with a resolution of 2,436 × 1,125 pixels. It features Dolby Vision and HDR10 for stunning high-contrast video playback, as well as TrueTone dynamic white-balance adjustment, a feature of the 10.5-inch iPad Pro and the new iPhone 8 models. The screen takes up the whole screen and there’s no home button — you unlock your phone with your face. Oh, and it’s water- and dust-resistant, and capable of charging wirelessly.

iPhone X pre-orders are slated to deliver on November 3, but many people found themselves having to wait until the end of November or December to receive one. It looks like Christmas came early, though, as The Verge confirms there are multiple reports of shipping estimates moving up as early as November 6. You should check your shipping estimate from Apple to see if your device is arriving sooner.
The iPhone X costs $1,000, and it’s available in limited stock at Apple stores, carriers, and retailers on November 3. You can nab one in either 64GB or 256GB, but the latter will cost $1,150. If you’re planning on picking one up at a store, Apple recommends arriving early — you may want to consider waiting on line the night before or early in the morning.
Some carriers, like Sprint, are cutting customers a discount. New and existing customers on the carrier’s Sprint Flex plan will be able to get a 64GB iPhone for $22.22 per month for 18 months ($400) with an eligible trade-in. The iPhone X was the third phone announced by Apple on September 12, joining the iPhone 8 and 8 Plus. It followed the Series 3 Apple Watch, which comes with built-in cellular connectivity.

OLED display

Apple released a support document about the iPhone X’s OLED display. The document states users may see slight shifts in color when looking at the screen from an angle. Apple also warned that users may experience screen burn-in with extended use of the phone.
But most recently, DisplayMate — the company that makes professional-grade software for display calibration — published its detailed results for the iPhone X. According to its testing, the iPhone X has the best smartphone display on the market. Based on lab tests and measurements, the device earned DisplayMate’s A-plus rating — which is the highest ever. The results noted that the X had close to “textbook perfect calibration and performance,” along with the highest absolute color accuracy, highest full-screen brightness for OLED smartphones, among others.

Warranty information

With the iPhone X pre-orders now live, MacRumors spotted that Apple released pricing information about the phone’s repairs. In the U.S., Apple will charge you a flat rate of $280 for iPhone X screen repairs and $550 for any other damages. If it’s a manufacturing defect, then it’s covered by Apple’s standard one-year warranty.
Pricing also varies depending what country you’re in:
  • U.K: 286 euros for screen repairs, 556 euros for other damage
  • Australia: $420 for screen repairs, $820 for other damage
  • Canada: $360 for screen repairs, $710 for other damage
  • Germany: 321 euros for screen repairs, 611 euros for other damage
But these prices are only applicable to those who don’t purchase AppleCare+ for the iPhone X. AppleCare+ is optional, but it extends an iPhone’s coverage to two years based on the original purchase date of the device. If you decide to purchase the extended warranty plan, then screen repairs will only cost you $30 and any other damages will be $100.

Production woes reportedly hamper iPhone X supply

Apple will sell the iPhone X in 55 countries around the world. But there will be delays.
The iPhone X’s Face ID sensor is reportedly taking more time to assemble than expected, according to The Wall Street Journal, contributing to shipping delays. The problem lies in an “imbalance” between the so-called Romeo module, an infrared dot projector that beams more than 30,000 invisible dots to create a depth map of faces, and the Juliet module, which analyzes the pattern produced by those dots.
According to Bloomberg, it was earlier this fall that Apple realized production problems meant it wouldn’t have enough iPhone Xs for the holidays. Sources familiar to the situation say Apple’s solution was reportedly to let suppliers reduce the accuracy of the iPhone X’s Face ID feature. Lowering the requirements for its Face ID technology would permit the firm to speed up production. The change also means that it takes less time to test completed modules. But it’s still unclear how these changes will decrease the technology’s efficacy.
Following Bloomberg’s detailed report on Face ID accuracy being reduced, Apple responded to the claim. The company’s spokeswoman Trudy Muller said, “Bloomberg’s claim that it reduced the accuracy spec for Face ID is completely false and we expect Face ID to be the new gold standard for facial authentication.” Muller also assured users that both quality and accuracy of Face ID remains the same, and the chance of someone other than you unlocking your phone is still one in a million.

Camera, A11 Bionic chip, and AR

The iPhone X’s camera has a dual-lens 12-megapixel rear camera with dual optical image stabilization, consisting up of a wide-angle f/1.8 aperture lens and a telephoto f/2.4 aperture lens. The 7-megapixel front camera supports Portrait mode and has auto image stabilization and exposure control. Apple’s new image signal processor provides advanced pixel processing and a new color filter, and both cameras use the new Natural Lighting effect introduced on the iPhone 8 and ARKitaugmented reality features. Finally, video has also been improved with 4K resolution movies at 60fps and slow-motion video at 240fps.
DxOMark — a website focused on assessing image quality for mobile phones, lenses, and camera sensors — recently evaluated the iPhone X. The site released its results, which indicate the device received an overall score of 97 out of 100 — the second-highest score in the DxOMark Mobile overall ranking. With the best Photo sub-score so far — 101 points — results stated the iPhone X is the top performer for stills. In comparison to the iPhone 8 Plus, DxOMark specifically pointed out the iPhone X’s improved telephoto lens led to higher results in Zoom, Exposure, Noise, Texture, and Artifacts.

The iPhone X retains the A11 Bionic chip from the iPhone 8, a 64-bit super efficient processor with a new Apple-designed graphics unit, which has 30 percent more speed than the existing unit. It has six cores and better performance than the A10 Fusion chip, and while Apple typically doesn’t publish RAM specifications, filings from China electronics regulator TENNA show the iPhone X has 3GB of RAM. Apple says the high-performance cores to provide a 25-percent speed increase and a 70 percent boost from the four performance cores.
Regarding battery life, the iPhone X lasts about two hours longer than the iPhone 7 Plus on a single charge. That’s not surprising; according to Chinese electronics regulator Tenaa’s filings, the iPhone X’s has a 2,716mAh battery, which isn’t far off from the iPhone 7 Plus’s 2,900mAh. It supports wireless charging via Qi-compatible accessories, and Apple will introduce a proprietary charging solution called AirPower early next year.

Apple’s new facial recognition technology, Face ID, makes its debut on the iPhone X. It works using the TrueDepth camera system hidden in the notch at the top of the display. Glance at the iPhone X and it illuminates your face with an infrared dot array, allowing the infrared camera to identify it. It even works in the dark. Using the iPhone X’s six-core A11 Bionic processor paired with 3GB of RAM, a neural engine processes the image in real time, mapping the contours and shape of your face mathematically.
Apple claims Face ID isn’t confused by hairstyles, hats, or beards. According to Apple software chief Craig Federighi, the iPhone will be able to recognize your face through “most” sunglasses, too, as long as they let through enough infrared light. Protections against masks and pictures are in place, and face data is stored in the secure enclave inside the A11 Bionic chip.
Don’t worry about Face ID being less secure than other biometric systems; it’s not. The chance of someone other than you unlocking your phone with Touch ID is one in 50,000, Apple says, but for Face ID it’s one in a million. Apple Pay requires you to look at the phone when you go to pay, and it works with existing apps that use Touch ID for authentication.
On top of that, Apple has implemented some software protections against people stealing your phone and just holding it to your face to unlock it. For starters, if you don’t stare at the phone itself, it won’t unlock. And if you grip the buttons on both edges of the phone, the device will temporarily disable facial recognition.
If you remember when Apple first implemented Touch ID, you’ll remember some bumps and bugs at first — but many of those bugs shouldn’t exist with Face ID. In fact, developers won’t even have to worry about implementing it — if an app uses Touch ID, it will automatically also use Face ID. Craig Federighi, Apple’s senior vice president of software, said as much in an interview with John Gruber on Daring Fireball.

PLASTICS CEO finds much to like in GOP tax reform package

In presenting the Republican tax reform proposal today, House Speaker Paul Ryan (R-Wis.) made the case that the legislation was a boon for middle-class families. A family of four would save $1182 a year under the GOP plan, he stressed repeatedly. Carteaux issued a statement today in which he praised provisions in the Tax Cut and Jobs Act that would “help the new manufacturing economy, and assist our members in their effort to continue to succeed, grow and create jobs.” A reduction in the corporate tax rate from the current 35% to 20% and preservation of the research and development (R&D) tax credit are among the parts of the tax reform package that Carteaux found especially appealing.
“Earlier this year during the 2017 Plastics Industry Fly-In, men and women from around the country who depend on America’s plastics manufacturing industry came to Washington to advocate for measures that would help create jobs and make their industry more globally competitive,” said Carteaux. “Among those priorities were a lower corporate tax rate, immediate expensing of capital investments and the preservation of the research and development tax credit.” He also singled out “treatment for S corps” as a positive development.
Most businesses, and the vast majority of small businesses, are taxed as S corporations, or partnerships, explains conservative think tank the Heritage Foundation. The GOP tax proposal would reduce the tax rate these businesses pay from as much as 40% to 25%. There are a number of rules attached to the proposal that complicate the law but that are necessary to prevent higher-income salaries from being “passed through” and taxed at a lower rate, adds the organization on its website.
In his statement, Carteaux drew attention to the proposal's preservation of the R&D tax credit, which he called “critical” for the industry, and the ability to use 529 education savings for apprenticeship programs, “a concept that we discussed with policymakers at our Fly-In. Allowing families to use post-secondary education savings for good-paying, quality career options in the manufacturing sector will help address the industry workforce needs and help provide career options for those who may not best be served by four-year university degree programs," said Carteaux.
“We look forward to continuing our work with the administration and bipartisan leadership in Congress as this important tax package moves forward in the coming weeks,” he concluded.
