USD Reverses Early Drop as Euro Falls From Highest Since 2015

USD Reverses Early Drop as Euro Falls From Highest Since 2015

The dollar reversed earlier losses, supported by a steady climb in Treasury yields. The euro retreated from the highest since 2015 after the International Monetary Fund urged the European Central Bank to be cautious about removing stimulus.

The Bloomberg Dollar Spot index recouped losses of as much as 0.2 percent to gain about 0.2 percent, in line with an advance by Treasury yields. Meanwhile, the euro pulled back after climbing above 1.1700 for the first time since August 2015. Markets now turn to the Federal Reserve decision due Wednesday.

The FOMC’s statement on Wednesday will probably say that policy makers are ready to begin normalizing the central bank’s balance sheet relatively soon, which should solidify expectations for an announcement in September. There is no press conference scheduled for after the meeting

EUR/USD is trading with a gain of less than 0.1% at ~1.1649 after earlier rising as high as 1.1712, stalling at technical resistance from the 1.1714 peak seen on Aug. 24, 2015. The euro retreat came shortly after an IMF report urged the ECB to maintain its stimulus program, echoing past ECB concerns of downside risks to growth
EUR ran into strong selling around its high; more than EU1b of offers were visible in the 1.1700/05 zone before EUR reached its peak, a trader in Toronto said, while another described profit-taking from fast-money accounts as the pair extended its retreat below 1.1700 GBP/USD is trading ~1.3036 after earlier rising to a fresh high for the day at 1.3084 as morning dollar losses broadened.

GBP saw buying from a model-driven fund as it broke above 1.3050, adding momentum to the pair, according to a trader in London familiar with the transactions who asked not to be identified because not authorized to speak publicly. GBP may face technical resistance at the July 18 high 1.3126 USD/JPY trading ~111.87 vs fresh session high of 111.93, vaulting its 100-DMA at 111.67 and testing the 55-DMA of 111.83. JPY lost ground vs all of its G-10 peers after BOJ minutes showed that new policy board members agree the central bank is far from removing its policy accommodation. The USD/JPY gain was supported by a rise in U.S. stocks that came after a round of positive earnings reports, notably from Caterpillar, that underpinned some risk currencies such as AUD

Taiwan Delegation Gearing Up for 2017 SelectUSA Investment Summit

Taiwan Delegation Gearing Up for 2017 SelectUSA Investment Summit

84 Taiwan Companies to Join Global Business Leaders and U.S. Government Officials at Top Investment Event
American Institute in Taiwan Director Kin Moy today announced that 84 companies from a variety of industries across Taiwan will be travelling to Washington D.C. to participate in the SelectUSA Investment Summit (Summit), June 18-20, 2017.  The Summit is the United States’ highest profile event to connect global companies and U.S. economic development organizations (EDOs) to facilitate business investment in the United States.
“We are entering a new period of economic revival in the United States,” said U.S. Secretary of Commerce Wilbur Ross.  “This is an exciting time for global companies to explore the U.S. market and find partners that can help them create a footprint, expand operations, and achieve growth.  There is no better place to make those connections than this Summit.”
Taiwan has had a strong presence at previous Investment Summits in the United States.  This year, the Taiwan delegation is the largest ever, with 140 delegates from 84 companies representing potential investors, local business associations, and Taiwan authorities.  The participating companies represent a variety of industries, including petrochemical, iron and steel, ICT, biotechnology, banking, machinery, aerospace, franchising, and education.  This demonstrates the deep ties and broad range of Taiwan industries interested in either establishing or expanding their businesses in the United States.
“We are thrilled to welcome 84 Taiwan companies to the Summit and to the United States,” said Kin Moy, Director of the American Institute in Taiwan. “And, we are particularly pleased to have a business delegation of Taiwan executives led by National Policy Advisor to the President, Ho Mei-Yueh as an integral part of our overall delegation to the SelectUSA Summit.  AIT is grateful for the strong interest from the Taiwan business community, and the partnership with the Taiwan authorities, in assembling this important trade delegation.”
The United States is currently home to more foreign direct investment (FDI) than any other country in the world, with a total stock of $3.1 trillion at the end of 2015.  Taiwan companies currently operating in the U.S. support nearly 12,000 jobs, invest almost $100 million annually in innovative R&D and contribute close to $700 million in U.S. goods exports.
The SelectUSA Investment Summit is the highest profile event to connect global companies and U.S. EDOs to facilitate business investment in the United States.  To date, representatives from 51 U.S. states and territories and more than 65 international markets have registered for the 2017 Investment Summit.
The previous three SelectUSA Summits in 2014, 2015, and 2016 attracted thousands of international investors, with the 2016 Summit alone attracting more than 2,600 total attendees, including investors from 70 markets, EDOs from 52 U.S. states and territories, and 22 chiefs of mission.  Past Summit participants announced $20.6 billion of new investment projects in the United States from 2014 to 2016.

TNT Express still struggling to remediate after Petya attack

Potentially "material" business impact.

TNT Express still struggling to remediate after Petya attack

International courier giant TNT Express is still struggling to make deliveries in Australia and all over the world almost a week on from the globally destructive Petya malware attack.

The cyber attack - which has been dubbed everything from Petya to NotPetya and GoldenEye - took out computers across an estimated 60 countries early last week.
FedEx-owned TNT Express was hit hard by the malware, which ravaged its business-critical systems globally.
The disruptions mean TNT has had to fall back to unspecificed "contingency plans" to continue operating, albeit at a reduced capacity.
Customer deliveries are delayed, the myTNT user portal is not operational, nor are the company's internal communications networks functioning.
"To mitigate the impact of a virus that affected TNT IT systems globally last week, TNT continues to implement contingency plans," a spokesperson said.
"Teams are making solid progress on remediating systems and methodically bringing business critical systems and services back online."
It warned that customers may experience service delays and restrictions "in the short term".
"We regret any inconvenience this may cause and ask for their understanding," the spokesperson said.
The company did not provide an estimated time of restoration, nor detail on the extent to which its IT environment had been impacted.
Some TNT Express customers have sympathised with the company's situation, but are growing frustrated at the ongoing problems. Others have expressed anger over a lack of communication from the courier.
"It would be nice to have an update on the situation considering it's now 3 July. I too am waiting for a parcel to be delivered which is affecting my business but I do realise how serious the cyber attack was," one customer wrote on its Facebook page.
"Also I understand that your phone lines are probably getting absolutely flogged right now so I won't bother to ring. An update on the situation would be awesome. I'm just worried my parcel is floating around somewhere in the world completely untracked and unaccounted for. Best of luck on getting the systems back up and running."
"No update, no change in the tracking service, HUGE delays in shipping and absolutely no communication and info," another said.
"I understand that you have been under serious IT attack but it should not be the reason for this amateur handling of the situation."
TNT Express upgraded to Windows 7 prior to its acquisition by FedEx in August 2015. It is unclear what version of the Microsoft system is currently in use. The company has been contacted for detail.
FedEx has indicated the financial impact of the malware could be "material". TNT Express claims to deliver almost one million packages across the globe every day.
FedEx said all other group companies were unaffected. The business temporarily suspended trading of its shares on the New York Stock Exchange for about an hour last Wednesday following the initial attack.
Security researchers suspect the malware that attacked TNT Express and many others masquerades as ransomware - victims aren't actually able to restore their files if they pay the US$300 demand - to hide its true intention of destruction.
Ukraine has gone as far as to blame Russia for the malware, which the country claims is part of an ongoing series of attacks designed to spread destruction and fear, and install malware for future sabotage, amidst political tensions.
The virus - which appears to be almost identical to the GoldenEye variant of the Petya malware that surfaced last year - uses similar exploits to the WannaCry malware to crash and reboot computers after rewriting the hard disk master boot record.
Unlike Petya, however, it overwrites the first 25 sector blocks of a victim PC's hard disk to do "permanent and irreversible damage", meaning files can't be decrypted after the ransom is paid.
The exploits target vulnerable computers that run the Windows System Message Block (SMB) version 1 file sharing protocol.
